The NBA

Last night was the beginning of the NBA season with last years champs, the LA Lakers, playing their hometown "rivals" the LA Clippers. The Lakers were awarded their championship rings and beat the Clippers. But most importantly who has the better "wife tattoo"? Kobe or Lamar?

I'm gonna go with Lamar....his seems easier and less painful to remove when that lovin feelin is lost. Or he could say "KO" stands for "Knock Out!"

The Cavs and Celtics played last night too. The Cavs looked sharp in the first quarter, but could not keep it up (that's what she said) and lost to the Celtics. Shaq did look good in his Cavs debut. It'll be interesting to see how he and Lebron work together. Maybe he'll let us know what he's feeling on twitter? Too bad twitter wasn't around when he was playing with Kobe.

ALCS on Fox

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)
The ALCS on Fox. In general, we are not fans of Fox. Our fav shows are on NBC. But we love the technology Fox is using - the split screen between the pitcher and batter simultaneously with a picture in picture for the catcher giving the signs. Very cool. And the heated discussion of the use of instant replay in the commentators box. As bias as they both are it was sort of interesting to listen to. But should this game get any longer? We do not think so. If they use more instant replay it better be in fast real time - the technology is out there. The fans can adapt. What we do not love: the sponsored "freeze cam." That editor should be fired. We get it - he is working fast - but come on. Half the time the freeze shows something unrelated to the play or even blocks the play behind it. Nice try at a new way to market beer.
Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

Crazy game last night - the 7th inning in particular. 9 runs and 2 lead changes between the Yankees and the Angels.
On another note:
Blonde actress/bartender asked for, and got! (according to Page Six) Mark Sanchez's digits while he was celebrating his brothers b day at the bar where she holds court and makes tips. Think it was his real number? His reps did not comment.

Impress! (Facts and figures to impress your date or mate)
How awesome is the 7th inning stretch? Thanks to wikipedia today we learned that the tradition of the 7th inning stretch dates back to the 1800's. What? Possibly beginning because of restless students at a Manhattan College baseball game they were told to stand up and get out their pent up energy. It worked. Now it has gone so far that stadiums have their own traditions - like last night at Angels Stadium. The play "Build me up buttercup," by the Foundations of 1968. Do you know the song - either from the movie Mallrats or There's Something About Mary? Don't get us wrong, it is a good sing along bar song, but really? Is that song supposed to get the crowd riled up and in the game? Not so sure. On to the Bronx for game 6 on Saturday!

The New Jersey Turnpike Series

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)
Congratulations Phillies! You beat the Dodgers and are going to the World Series for the second year in a row!

The other LA team of Anaheim isn't doing so well either. Look for the Yankees to end the series tonight.

Anyone else kind of bored by the ALCS and NLCS? It seems like only two teams really showed up to play and they weren't playing each other.

Also, can we come up with a better name than the NJ Turnpike Series?

Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

Yeah, I would grab it too.

Slogans and Such

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Tonight the Yankees and Angels play game 4 of the ALCS. Will we be watching to see who will play best - yes. But we are really interested in who will manage best. The true game will be between Joe Girardi and Mike Scioscia. It is so important to make player moves that matter but they must be made at the right time. Changing pitchers, subbing faster base runners, these choices can shape a game.

Scioscia kept the Angels catcher Jeff Mathis in the game instead of pinch running for him. He later had the game winning walk off hit in the bottom of the 11th. Having faith in your players is key. Girardi needs to learn not not over manage his bullpen. The Yankees were down to their last pitcher. So tonight - let's see if he recovers for if Scioscia can prey on his weakness.

Impress! (Facts and figures to to use on Trivia Night)

Slogans galore! Can't you just feel the fall air and the excitement in sports right now! We have Baseball in the Post Season. Its so exciting we almost dropped our knitting watching the Angels and Yankees in extra innings last night! We have Football where the talented teams are leaving the blah teams in the dust.

And we are on final countdown to the season opening games for the NBA. We would like to discuss basketball team tactics. Intimidation and loyalty are our top 2. We love slogans and the NBA has some of the best sports slogans out there. A few that really shine:

Toughest:

The Atlanta Hawks. Now you know.

It's like, "yeah we just pounded you - now deal with it!"

Tearjerker:

The Indiana Pacers. Passion. Pride. Pacers.

It makes you so happy to just be even a little old fan of the Pacers.

Most Futile:

The Cleveland Cavaliers. All for one. One for all.

Will they change this once Lebron James leaves after this season?

For the loyal:

The New York Knicks. Declare your team.

This one can really unite the largest city in the country. Plus we loath the Nets and can do so together as one. (The New Jersey Nets. More than a game. Yeah its about a state that is not a cool as New York!)

Vaca! (cool tidbits for your sports holiday)

And speaking of New York. It is a tough town. The Sports Museum of America only lasted here for about a year before going bankrupt and closing. Sure it was in a bad location. Sure they did not have $$ to do good marketing. But there is lots of other cool stuff to do in New York (like at all costs avoiding the ESPN Zone in Times Square).

Our current fav place to watch games and eat cheesy tater tots & yummy onion rings: The Stumble Inn: http://nymag.com/listings/bar/the-stumble-inn/

But if you go, keep in mind they do not take reservations. And you may have to scramble / fight for a table when one opens up. We got lucky and eyed a group leaving so we scored! They have lots of flat screens and a decent selection of beer - but Amstel Light and Heineken were sorely missed. The best part though, they play good rock music during the commercials. It is a nice touch and really keeps up the moral and excitement.

Perfect so far

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Yesterday, the New Orleans Saints played great football vs. the New York Giants. So far they are playing perfect football this season, they are 5 and 0. This is the 3rd time, in the whole 43 year history of the team, they have started a season with this record. Marques Colston, wide receiver, had 166 yards today and scored a touchdown. Sunday he was the fav receiver for quarterback Drew Brees. And no pressure - he performed like this in front of a sold out Superdome, 70,011 people.

Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

28 year old not so cute Russian, Nikolay Davydanko won the first ever Shanghai Masters, beating super cute Rafael Nadal. Winning in the largest city in China must have cool for the Iron Man of tennis. He plays in more matches yearly than any other pro. Playing since he left his parents in the Ukraine at 11 years old, he is hoping this may finally be his year.

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

It’s supposed to be a pleasant 76 degrees today in LA when the Dodgers battle the Phillies in Game 1 of the NLCS. But I bet the owner’s box will be a lot chillier. Dodger’s owner, Frank McCourt, and his wife and team CEO, Jaime McCourt, just announced they were separating. What’s that saying – don’t mix business with pleasure?

Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

Phillies starting pitcher, Cole Hamels, is not only last years World Series MVP, he’s a new dad! Congratulations to him and his wife, Heidi, on the birth of their son, Caleb Michael.

Poor right-hander Jeff Weaver. He was left off the roster for the NLCS by Dodger Manager Joe Torre. His brother, Jered, is most likely starting in Game 3 of the ALCS for the Angels. The last time brothers faced each other in the World Series was 1964 (Ken and Clete Boyer). At least now their parents don’t have to choose whom to root for.

Technology for Nascar

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Greg Biffle, who will be 40 this year, is writing an "online diary" - hello! we call that blogging - for USA Today (I am sure they will insert typos to match the rest of the paper.) He will write about the Chase for the Sprint Cup (otherwise known as the trophy for who won the most races this year, which has a giant Sprint logo on it and is filled with millions of dollars.) He has never won the cup, and most likely will not win this year. So he will be able to write about the Chase with a true, unbiased, not bitter, journalistic view. We will see.

Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

Today, Nascar will announce the inductees of the first ever class for the Nascar Hall of Fame. Who defines Nascar? Who will be the original Nascar Hall of Famer? Out of the 25 Nominees we choose: Dale Earnhardt who began racing in 1975 (making a measly $1925 that year.) It is impossible to think of Nascar and not think of Dale Earnhardt and his legacy.

Can golf bring sexy back?

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Let's talk golf and Justin Timberlake. Yes he is sexy and yes he dresses well. What does he want to do more than anything on a day off? That's right play golf. His ideal job? Range rat. So he could stay at a golf range for hours practicing. How cute! This might make us finally give in and play a round (mini / put put does not count!) and see what all the fuss is about. Who will play that is actually a great golfer? Alice Cooper. Looks so evil/cool in golf clothes.

Just Another Halo Victory

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Angels beat the Red Sox 7-6 and move on to the ALCS!

Ok, not just another victory. This was huge! (that’s what she said*) If you’re an Angels fan like me, you know that the Angels and Red Sox have history. The “classy” Red Sox brought in Dave Henderson to throw out the first pitch for good luck before Game 3 of the ALDS and a nice little reminder of 1986 when Henderson helped bring back the Red Sox from the brink of elimination with a home run off relief pitcher Donnie Moore. The Angels were one pitch away from going to the World Series, but with that home run, Henderson tied the game and the Red Sox won in extra innings. The series went back to Boston and the Angels lost both games there and the series. While the Red Sox chose to live in the past, the Angels lived in the present all the way to the top of the ninth inning when they scored 3 runs with 2 outs to beat the Red Sox 7-6. Maybe the Angels should thank Boston for the reminder – it’s not over til it’s over!

Bring on the Yankees! Game 1 is this Friday.

Impress! (Facts and figures to impress your date or mate)

Next time you meet a Red Sox fan, ask them about Bill Buckner, but be prepared to lose a limb. The Red Sox were up 3 games to 2 in the 1986 World Series against the Mets. Game 6 went to the bottom of the 10th with Boston up by 3. But poor pitching helped the Mets tie the game and then a ground ball to Buckner, which should have been an easy out, rolled under his glove and the Mets ended up winning Game 6. The Mets went on to win the World Series in Game 7.

The Fin Zone

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Tonight the Miami Dolphins welcome hottie Mark Sanchez and the rest of the NY Jets to the Fin Zone (otherwise known as Land Shark Stadium.) The game is on ESPN so you have to try and not get annoyed with the commentators.

We tried to find someone cute on the Dolphins team to compare but alas, no luck. We will be looking for Joey Porter though, who has been pro for 11 seasons (3rd as a Dolphin.) www.miamidolphins.com has a hilarious pic of him next to their logo - it makes him very intriguing...

Some of us here at Sports by Girls love NY. Some of us love LA. This should make for an exciting ALCS. Hopefully there will be drinks to go along with the smack talking.

Lets start with Bobby Abreu. Known as El Comedulce he signed a 1 year contract with LAA for $5 million - a big pay cut from what he made last year with the Yankees. El Comedulce means literally the candy eater - but around MLB it has become "sweet as candy."

The NY Knicks have a new player - the 7 foot tall Darko Milicic. And he is super cute. But don't get too excited girls - he just got married and had a baby!

Originally from Serbia, 7 years ago he was thought to be the best upcoming player but has not done much, as the Pistons, Magic and Grizzlies never gave him a chance. Lets see if he is a going to be a star with the Knicks this year. Tonight they play an exhibition game at the Celtics tonight. We love the Celtics uniforms! You can't go wrong with green clovers!

According to www.nba.com/knicks the coach says: “You see his potential,” D’Antoni said. "Sometimes you get guys right at the right moment.”

What else is on TV?

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

It must be frustrating to watch all the other teams play in the Post Season, while you take a trip to Disneyland. Stupid Red Sox - guess they think they are too good to spend time practicing.

So the Red Sox play the Angels tonight. Not sure who we want to lose more - in fact we wish they both could lose. Since the game is on the West Coast for us on the East Coast it begins too late to even watch (9:37 pm EST.) I am sure all Bostonians will be tired tomorrow. According to
www.mlb.com the Red Sox are 9-1 in their three American League Division Series vs. the Angels. Will this year be different? OK so maybe it will be better if the Red Sox win so the Yankees can avoid the Angels and have the chance to kill the Red Sox later.

Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

Did you see Jay Z at the Yankees game last night? Yes he was next to Kate Hudson who had a camera on her the whole night... Yes he was wearing weirdo square black granny sunglasses...Yes he looked like a cartoon version of himself mixed with Flavor Flav. No mention of Mayor Bloomberg, who has a much better seat behind the batter.

Impress! (Facts and figures to impress your date or mate)

The Angels play at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim, and have since 1966 when it opened. For the 4 years prior, they rented Dodgers Stadium and during their games they called it:
Chávez Ravine Stadium named after Julien Chavez, a politician from LA during the 1800's. While in his late 20's he acquired the land today's Dodger Stadium sits on (that's right acquired - back then you just asked for land - you did not have to buy it!)

The Post Season starts...NOW!

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Today a triple header in MLB! But of course we only care about the Yankees! The game begins tonight at 6 ish and with the Twins winning last night by using 6 (yes 6) pitchers to do so - they then had to travel across the country to the Bronx. They should be nice and grouchy for the game tonight. Lets hope they are too tired to be pumped up so Jeter can stomp all over them!

Tie Breaker

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

For the 3rd year in a row there is a tie breaker game needed in baseball, this time between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins. The game will be played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis - could be the last game here as next year they move to a new stadium. Watch for the crowd to be in all white, should look pretty cool. The winner will play the Yankees in the AL Division Series on Wednesday.

Which team do the Yankees have a better chance at beating? Either: since they both will use their best pitcher tonight just to advance. On second thought, maybe the Twins as the Yankees have beat them every game so far this year.

Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

The NY Mets had a terrible season - they did not hustle - they did not care. Today when we voted in the poll at http://www.nydailynews.com/ for whether or not to fire the Owners of the Mets (Fred and Jeff Wilpon) the results were 68% to fire them - only 32% to keep them. The fans have spoken!

A Rod Vs. A Rod

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Is it Monday yet? Monday night football! Who is hotter Brett or Aaron? We vote for the Cali boy - Aaron Rodgers (the A Rod of football) of the Green Bay Packers. He is hot - likes to throw the ball - and took Brett Favre's place when he pretended to retire.

Can't wait to see who comes out on top!

Score! (Gossip, interviews and intelligent scoops)

So A Rod (Alex Rodriguez) decided to really go out with a bang last night. 7 RBI's in one inning, setting a new AL record! A 3 run home run and a grand slam in one inning. He finishes the season with 30 homers and 100 RBI's.

But more importantly - is A Rod having a baby with Kate Hudson? They have been seen kissing at Yankee Stadium and holding hands while out in NYC. But the funniest part - A Rod was mentioned on SNL during weekend update Saturday night: If she is prego - then it is the first time he has "produced" in October.

Oh to be so good and to have never won it all...
