Keep on Running

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)
Today was a perfect day in NYC.  What's the best way to recover from a wet Halloween parade followed by a steamy costume party? How about running over 26 miles through the 5 boros. Bright and early this morning the 40th incarnation of the ING NYC Marathon started in Staten Island. For the women this year, when the elite 5 (who are all moms) broke away from the rest of the pack heading up First Ave toward the Bronx  you could feel the intense determination of Paula Radcliff (UK) as she lead.  But with only 2 miles until the finish line she faltered and gave way to Derartu Tulu from Ethiopia. The bigger news is that Meb Keflezighi (USA) finished first for the men.  He is the first American to win since 1982.  He finished in just over 2 hours and 9 minutes.  As he crossed the finish line Lenny Kravit's "Always on the run" was playing.

Vaca! (cool tidbits for your sports holiday)
If you find yourself in the city of brotherly love (you'd never know it was nicknamed that by the way the fans act) don't be surprised if, when you arrive by train you get booed like the Yankees did. And if you have time after your World Series game to do a bit of site seeing you must check out the Arshile Gorky exhibit at the Philly Museum of Art.

Make a Difference (ways to get involved)
So many people were running the Marathon today for a charity.  52 year old Joan Benoit Samuelson ran in a bright yellow Livestrong tank top.  Anthony Edwards ran to raise awareness for Shoe 4 Africa. He is big into this charity, even donating his $125,000 salary from the final episode of ER last year to the cause.  You can help their with their latest venture of building a new hospital in Africa.

Just Another Halo Victory

Featured! (Game, team or player we are into today)

Angels beat the Red Sox 7-6 and move on to the ALCS!

Ok, not just another victory. This was huge! (that’s what she said*) If you’re an Angels fan like me, you know that the Angels and Red Sox have history. The “classy” Red Sox brought in Dave Henderson to throw out the first pitch for good luck before Game 3 of the ALDS and a nice little reminder of 1986 when Henderson helped bring back the Red Sox from the brink of elimination with a home run off relief pitcher Donnie Moore. The Angels were one pitch away from going to the World Series, but with that home run, Henderson tied the game and the Red Sox won in extra innings. The series went back to Boston and the Angels lost both games there and the series. While the Red Sox chose to live in the past, the Angels lived in the present all the way to the top of the ninth inning when they scored 3 runs with 2 outs to beat the Red Sox 7-6. Maybe the Angels should thank Boston for the reminder – it’s not over til it’s over!

Bring on the Yankees! Game 1 is this Friday.

*Exactly how bad is it if you’re at a wedding and the groom is having trouble putting the ring on the bride’s finger, the priest says “push a little harder” and I say under my breadth “that’s what she said!”

Impress! (Facts and figures to impress your date or mate)

Next time you meet a Red Sox fan, ask them about Bill Buckner, but be prepared to lose a limb. The Red Sox were up 3 games to 2 in the 1986 World Series against the Mets. Game 6 went to the bottom of the 10th with Boston up by 3. But poor pitching helped the Mets tie the game and then a ground ball to Buckner, which should have been an easy out, rolled under his glove and the Mets ended up winning Game 6. The Mets went on to win the World Series in Game 7.
